Reality Tour, South America: Running with Dog

Today started off on a healthy note. Our tour manager, Kevin, who has competed in a triathlon, has convinced me to run through the streets of Buenos Aires with him this morning. In my defense, I spin, hike, walk, do the elliptical trainer, lift weights occasionally …running, however, is not my thing. My chiropractor will back me up on this. But it’s hard to say no to Kevin and I doubt he has many passengers volunteering to run with him.

So up and out we are outside the Panamericano at 7am. We are joined by a little dog, a street mutt of some kind. I am not kidding when I tell you that when we went through a quick stretch, the little dog mimicked us doing that little arch and stretch that dogs do (dog owners, you know what I am talking about). Off we lope down Avenida 9 de Julio, surprisingly void of cars at this hour. Kevin tells me that is because dinner is later in the evening than what we are typically used to, so mornings get started later as well.

I look behind us and there is our little dog friend running with us. I have to confess I was a bit pre-occupied with my breathing and keeping stride with Kevin that I forget exactly the route we took. We finally lost our canine friend (about 20 minutes into our jog) when Kevin took me through the lobby entrance of a hotel he wanted me to see, and we exited another way onto another street. I felt bad about giving our dog jogger the slip.

Back at the hotel and another quick stretch, my legs are burning but I am glad I did the run and not the fitness center at the hotel. It was great to see this city just awakening when the streets are clear–save for a few shop keepers and early risers on their way to work. It gives you an entirely new perspective of Buenos Aires. Thanks, Kevin—though I may not be so grateful tomorrow!
