Tech On Tour: Airport security for your gadgets
Whether traveling for business or pleasure, most of us carry some form of electronics when we fly. The past decade has seen amazing advances in personal, portable devices. However, ongoing changes in airport security have cast suspicion on even the smallest electronics.
Traveling with your favorite gadgets can still be hassle free if you think ahead and anticipate the potential for inspection of your carry-on bags when going through security checks.
Here are some tips for flying with your electronics.
- Try to travel with one device that does many things and pack a portable charger or replacement batteries. Some great gadgets include:
- iPod Touch for music, games and other apps.
- Smart Phones that allow you to turn off the radio signal. Great for photos on tour, a variety of apps and ability to make calls back home if your provider offers service in the locations you are traveling.
- Amazon’s Kindle Wireless Reading Device which allows you to download, read and annotate books, newspapers and magazines from almost anywhere in the world.
- The Acer Aspire One Mini-Computer is very light and compact allowing for space to work on electronic documents or listen to your music playlist while sitting in the tight spaces provided by the airline.
- Have your electronics tucked in one secure part of your carry-on that allows you to easily remove it for inspection and then quickly secure it again in your bag.
- Even though security and others waiting in line will make you feel rushed, take your time and make sure you have all of your belongings. Remember that other people may be watching the items you packed and could be waiting for the opportunity to walk away with them. The more prepared and attentive you are during security screenings, the safer your precious electronics will be during your trip.
The most recent security alerts have prompted more detailed searches and additional checkpoints. The procedures will change from airport to airport, so stay flexible when it comes to TSA searches.
See the TSA website for additional suggestions to get you through security lines faster and hassle free. It is all a matter of preparation.
