The Romance of Travel

It seems romance is in the air. It helps that my husband surprised me on Valentine’s Day with the announcement that we would be escaping New England’s winter blahs to frolic in the sun and sand on a 4-night Caribbean getaway in March. My initial response was tepid, “With or without kids?” I asked. Hearing the answer I can only say that Cupid had hit its mark.

Now with a mini-vacation to look forward to, I started spreading the news telling my friends on Facebook and blogging about it here. After all, travel gives us bragging rights. It didn’t hurt my husband’s ego that my women friends were swooning (and their husband’s groaning) over his choice of a Valentine’s Day gift. After all, roses die all too soon and while chocolates are good, they can sabotage our already weakening New Year’s resolution to eat healthy.

The gift of travel is a gift of romance; a chance to get away from our daily lives and escape to somewhere beautiful. Exploring the world together is just plain romantic. Travel—whether to an exotic destination or a weekend away less than two hours from home—gives us permission to unwind and re-connect. So, guys, you missed your chance to do right this Valentine’s Day—but there is Mother’s Day, birthdays, next Holiday season…

Perhaps you are unsure of where to go? For some couples, it’s all about deserted beaches on quiet islands, while for others it’s about painting the town red in some metropolis. Maybe you and your significant other desire the tranquility of a spa retreat or perhaps adventure-filled experiences are what you crave. Here are my top 10 choices for romantic destinations (some I’ve been to, others I’ve only dreamed about):

1.)    Mykonos, Greece

2.)    Anywhere in Italy

3.)    New York City

4.)    Australia’s Great Barrier Reef

5.)    Victoria, British Columbia, Canada

6.)    Vienna, Austria

7.)    Costa Rica (who knew volcanoes and cloud forests could be sexy?)

8.)    New Hampshire’s White Mountains

9.)    Newport, Rhode Island

10.) Cleveland, Ohio (The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will bring you back a decade or two or three reminding you why you fell in love in the first place.)
