Epicurean Journeys

While experiencing a foreign land means taking in the sights and smells, many travelers prefer to couple their experience by truly savoring local flavors. It’s Discovering a destination through food is just about the best way to experience the world.

They say that the senses are closely linked to memory. It’s no wonder the smell of roasting garlic and onions can place me at any given time in a Tuscan city. When I think of New Orleans, I salivate thinking of jambalaya, gumbo and the aromatic flavors of the Creole and Cajun cuisine permeating the city of jazz. My mother is still offended that I deem the best meal of my life to this day the one I enjoyed in Pennsylvania Dutch inside an Amish farmhouse, at a table for 40. An Amish family welcomed our tour group into their home; they sang for us and talked to us, while we dined on homemade everything. The fresh bread and apple butter – the whole meal – it was so fresh and delicious and the company was truly unique and unparalleled. The list goes on - but I think you see the point.

Traveling is all about experiencing (and embracing) the tastes of the world. Near and far, they are diverse and delicious.

California’s Wine Country  includes learning the art of pairing wines and food. Canada’s charming, seemingly untouched region, called “the Maritimes,” is often called the country’s best kept secret. Ever wonder where those savory Digby scallops come from? Climb aboard a local fisherman’s boat for a cruise of the bay. Enjoy the spoils of the sea with a traditional clam boil and learn how to dye wool and boil down maple syrup.

Enjoy authentic Tuscan cuisine in one of medieval Cortona’s locandas, and visit a local market to learn about the fresh ingredients used in Tuscan recipes. Later, you’ll work alongside a chef who will show you the ins and outs of mastering Italian cooking. Of course, a trip here would not be complete without taking in the local vineyards and olive groves!

Hi Alizee! Thanks for commenting. I fully agree that a trip to Tuscany would not be complete without a tour of a winery, a trip through olive groves and vineyards – to really capture the local flavor and have an authentic experience. Maybe it’s the business I’m in, but I prefer doing it escorted every time – there’s a peace of mind knowing a trusted company will take care of EVERYTHING and make sure I have rich experiences and key ones as well – like these.

Glad you’re experiencing the world through food (and wine!) as well! Buon Appetito! :)
