Sun Safety on Tour

With summer just days away, the next few months will find plenty of Collette passengers on escorted tours around the world. And while tour managers try to keep guests shaded from direct sun as much as possible, there are times when a few tips for protecting yourself from the sun and heat this summer might come in handy.

 Be Sun Smart

While on tour, say in Italy, you can’t always limit your time outdoors during the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when UV rays are the most intense but you can wear a wide brimmed hat, wear sunglasses to protect your eyes, and use sun block of at least SPF 15 on all areas of exposed skin – and not just in the summer months.

And you’ll want to take water to drink when walking in St. Mark’s Square in Venice or Rome’s Colosseum. There are some nifty water bottle holders out there now with a lanyard that you can wear around your neck allowing you to be hands free for photo and video taking.

Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink. Keep yourself hydrated. Many medications for blood pressure and heart conditions as well as diuretics can affect your fluid requirements as can drinks containing caffeine and alcohol.

If after all these precautions, you find yourself feeling weak or dizzy; you could be feeling the early symptoms of heat exhaustion. If that appears to be the case, try to get into an air-conditioned place or take a cool shower if your hotel room is nearby.
