Just Plane Comfort

One airline recently made headlines when they announced that they will charge $8 for a pillow and blanket set in coach class for domestic trips and select international flights. The travel pack includes a fleece blanket and an inflatable neck pillow, among other items. This airline is not the only one taking such steps; its announcement followed suit with a few other airlines that charge $7 for a blanket and pillow set with eye shades and earplugs.
What can you do to ensure a comfy flight without extra costs?
There are a host of lightweight accessories on the market that take up little space in your carry-on. Consider a compact travel set or buy just the pieces you need a la carte.
- A supportive, inflatable neck pillow is key to catching quality shut eye on board. (It’s also more sanitary to bring your own.) Be careful not to inflate the pillow to maximum capacity—pressure will cause it to expand when the plane reaches altitude.
- An eye mask will block out light and reduce normal travel distractions for a more comfortable flight or train ride.
- You have to wonder how often provided blankets and pillows are laundered. I know I do. Sometimes it’s best to BYOB (blanket). When shopping for the ideal travel blanket, look for compact and lightweight blankets that take up the least amount of room. And find an appropriate size for your needs—extra material takes up precious packing space. Make sure it’s machine washable, too.
Recommendations from people who travel for a living:
- Travel Smith offers light weight, space-conscious items. Mention the code E9620.
- Do your research. It’s best to stay informed about the changes airlines are making. That way you can ensure the most comfortable travel possible.
As the economy bounces back at a steady pace, and we see more travelers doing what they love best – exploring the world, taking more than one vacation per year - maybe the airlines’ increase in business will bring those luxuries back to us. But for now… if you love to travel, plan ahead, bring a few key items, and create your own value for each flight you take.
