Tech on Tour: New high end camera
I have discovered a terrific new camera that might intrigue many of the photo and video enthusiasts who travel with us.
We recently purchased the Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera. This is the same camera now used to shoot cutting edge television programs like “24”, but it is designed with the knowledgeable consumer in mind. It is a favorite of Philip Bloom, a prolific cinematographer whose work has been featured on television networks like the Discovery HD channel.
I love that this 21 mega-pixel camera allows me to shoot terrific still photos in a variety of situations (even in low-light) and to capture great HD video. I’ve been experimenting with it recently, mostly with my kids and my dog, but I’ve managed to pick up a few tips I’d like to share.
- Stability is the key. For the best shot, do your best to keep a steady hand. There are several accessories available to enhance its stability that are reasonable priced, and a worthy investment for the serious photographer.
- Think Vignettes: The camera can only shoot 12 minutes of HD Video at a time. Don’t try to film the entire guided tour of the Coliseum. Plan your shots accordingly, so that you are less likely to miss the highlights.
- Audio Quality: While the camera will professional quality still and video footage, the audio capabilities might seem underwhelming. If high quality audio is important to you, consider obtaining a separate field audio recorder.
- The viewfinder: Investing in a viewfinder to supplement the LCD screen is worthwhile. This will help you frame those important scenes on the sunniest of days.
- Memory: Be sure to purchase extra flash memory cards with high-speed read-write capability. You won’t want to run out of memory just as your safari meets that herd of lions in the distance.
All in all, this camera is a wonderful tool for the dedicated shutterbug. I cannot wait to use it to capture the ornate details of the Sistine Chapel, and the stunning beauty of the Alps on my next trip to Italy.

I love my Canon 7D which has many similar features. A bit of a learning curve if you come from a point and shoot, but some great shots can be had.
Looks like you got some great shots with the 7D.
You are right it does take sometime getting use to the camera.
